When I found these pictures of Barry Dunning of the Physics Department on a contact sheet, I felt almost giddy. You just don’t see paisley shirts much these days. They must have been taken circa 1970:

Then I started feeling kind of bad. I really like Barry Dunning and it doesn’t seem quite fair to tease him just because he lived though the 1970s.
And then I remembered that I lived through the 1970s too. So as a gesture of repentance here’s my high school graduation picture, complete with a salmon colored shirt made of some dubious petrochemical product and a modified Dorothy Hamill haircut:
I lived through the 70’s too. I find nothing objectionable about your high school picture. Looks pretty cute to me. 😉
While I shudder at the paisley shirts (and the incredibly large collars), I have to agree with Marty. I can only wish my high school picture looked that good.
I concur. Some high school graduating pictures I have seen are much worse. In fact yours looks very good. But plaid is coming back! Ugh!
I have an awesome purple and white leather belt that I’ve handed on to my son. I wish I still had the multicolored pinstripe flares to go with it.
At Rice, I was mostly chambray shirts and jeans. It was already 1975.
Dunning started getting teaching prizes around 1975-6. This might have been for that. I remember going back to his class to get a photo for the Thresher and he’d discovered colored chalk. I was pretty happy that I had not needed to take multicolored notes in his class.
I took physics from Dunning in the colored chalk days. What a pain! I had to carry 3 colored pens and a pencil to take my physics notes. I think I used blue, black, red and pencil as the 4 colors. I took freshman physics in 1976-77. He did like those patterned shirts, even after they were a little out of style. By the way, there was nothing like a Barry Dunning lecture. He used to climb on the chalk trays to correct mistakes rather than take the time to pull down the sliding blackboard. What energy he had!

And if I remember, they were too hot when it was hot, too cold when it was cold and I had a tonne of them that my Dad bought because they were on sale.
