Band in the Rain

It’s a dreary, miserable day today and it reminded me of this rather forlorn image of the Rice band headed back towards the dorms in the rain:

Band in the rain

Unfortunately, I had stored this picture on a flash drive that failed and although I managed to retrieve the photos, I lost all of the associated data. I don’t know when it was taken or even where I came across it. It’s a pretty unusual view, too. I’m struggling to recall if I’ve ever seen another photo looking in this direction down the road from the RMC towards the old tennis courts. It looks pretty barren, doesn’t it?

I’d date it early 1970’s, before the MOB, of course.

  2. What? Flash drives can fail? That’s a chilling thought. Leo is right. I see what’s probably a ’71 Chevrolet and maybe a ’73 Plymouth Scamp on the right side of the parking lot, and several other late 60’s – early ’70’s cars. Interesting how big they all are… not a wagon, small coupe, or truck in sight, although some of them are “mid-size.” They’re on their way to the stadium would be my guess — no road out that way from the RMC as there was later.

    Certainly no later than ’75.
That’s a completely normal view to me.
And they are heading for the stadium, not the dorms, or no one would be on the other side of the sidewalk, facing away from the photographer.
An intrepid photographer as well, having the camera out in the rain.

Note the parking lot (and car was area) across the road from Wiess. As I recall, that lot was designated for Baker and Wiess colleges. The car wash was, of course, available to all.

Speaking of tennis courts, could you dedicate a post showing off the new tennis courts that were recently constructed (the George R. Brown Tennis Complex)? And perhaps even the latest photos of the Continuing Education School? We get all of these textual updates in alumni magazines or from the university’s social media accounts but there are never any pictures and as an alumnus I’m very curious to see the school’s newest additions…

I sure will. The tennis complex is still under construction, but I’ll go out and take some shots of it anyway. I’ll happily head over to the Glasscock School as well.

Thanks for asking–I gladly take requests.

Yes, it was barren when I was there (1967-71). That’s why I can’t shake the feeling that the campus is over-crowded today! 😎
