It’s a mess on campus today, between Families Weekend and preparations for the game with Army tomorrow. I skedaddled as soon as I could. But here, courtesy of loyal reader Nancy Burch, we have the prize-winning float from Homecoming 1958, a pointed mockery of the Army football team. The image is a bit blurry but I think there’s a laundry theme going on, with what I believe is an Army player being fed through a wringer. At least I think that’s a wringer, an appliance of which I have only the dimmest recollection:

You are correct — hanging out the jerseys of Pete Dawkins and Bill Carpenter (the Lonesome End). Winning definitely would have been better.

Regarding Rice & Army, I lost those years to medical school at that time, and from my memory — such as it is — in present time.
However, I do remember that one year Rice played 6 or 7 of the top teams in the country (maybe even of the top 10 teams)..
I believe Army was one of those teams. Others may have been Texas, LSU, Arkansas, Texas A&M. Perhaps a west coast team. Maybe Wisconsin, as Rice played an away game with them in about 1956.
Hopefully, some other old timer can remember the others.
Regarding ‘memory’, Marvin Zindler of “Best Little Whore House” always said “It’s hell to be poor”. Being old is NOT quite so bad, but it approximates it.

Are you sure that is 1958? There are more buildings in that location than I remember.
