I had to laugh at myself a little bit today. I came across this photograph and didn’t even notice that there were people in it until I had already scanned it:
What I had focused on, of course, were the chairs all jumbled up in the back of the room. The picture looks to have been taken in the ’70s but those chairs are far older–probably not original equipment but still pretty old. The typewriter I noticed next. Also old. It didn’t occur to me until just now to wonder what on earth was going on here and why these young ladies were photographed in a room full of outdated equipment. That’s almost certainly unanswerable but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if some of those chairs were still floating around somewhere. In fact I have a couple of ideas about where one might look.
Bonus: I’m going to be out of town for a few days. I might miss a day or two here but then again I might not.
Sisters?
Based on the hair, I would guess early 1970’s. I remember typewriters like that at my high school.
I looked at the picture again when I saw your facebook post. It’s a small room, but it has blinds AND window-darkening shades. It looks like the front of the room is rows of those Phys Lec sort of wooden chairs with the attached desks, and then there are more piled up in the back. A normal classroom that has a projector, and piles of chairs from another room being renovated nearby? And what is that thing in the left lower corner of the picture? It’s so washed out I can’t tell if it is a machine, a collage of several things which appear attached, or what.
I also doubt those two women are sisters. The eyes (and brows), the noses, the cheekbones and the jaw lines are all different between them.
Those are student desks stacked in the back. They were still in use in GRBH classrooms until a few years ago. I have a newer pic of them in use.
Looks like Fondren to me. Those look like study tables and chairs, with piled-up tablet chairs in the back. I remember seeing jumbles of old furniture in Fondren. Tablet chairs don’t stack. (they are in fact a giant pain in the tochis.) The woman on the left bears some resemblance to my classmate Melissa Miller Greenwell, Baker ’86 but I’m not convinced that it is her. The woman on the right might be holding a piece of card catalog note paper.
I think the thing in the lower left is the woman’s purse or bag.
