Monday Mystery

Does anyone know who this woman is? Browsing through some Athletics files I found a whole contact sheet full of images of her posing in a variety of goofy ways. She’s both lovely and game. This photo struck me as the most dignified of the lot:

There’s no date, of course, but the ball on the shelf says “Good Luck in the Southwest Conference.”

Bonus Mystery: Here’s one that emerged from a box of R Association pictures. I don’t recognize anything or anyone except Tommy Lasorda and his large zucchini.

The helmet appears to be the one that was used from 1986-1989, if that’s any help. http://swchelmets.tripod.com/rice.html

  2. One of the items on the shelf reads “HOT LINE TO VICTORY” on the comb-bound spine.

    Found it! Published in 1969.

The zucchini is a cucuzza. Ask Penny if you want to know how to cook it.

I’m pretty sure that’s Frankie B. Mandola giving the zucchini to Tommie Lasorda the year Lasorda was the Guest speaker at the annual fundraiser for Frankie’s favorite charity, the Texas Italian-American Sports Federation. The absolute best though was the year they did a Steve Tyrell concert at the Bayou to raise money.

The woman holding the helmet has a ring with a large stone on her left hand. Could these be silly engagement pictures?

The picture is pretty grainy, so it is hard to pick up details in the background. Do you have a clearer photo or scan?

I was going to guess 1972-75 timeframe and someone connected with Big Al Conover.

Upon further review the Rice tab above the face ask doesn’t come about till the 80’s. Perhaps it is Watson Brown’s wife? The wide stripe shows up in multiple version of Owl helmets.

  7. Karen says:

I’d thought 70s too, when I first saw the clothing style. But given the logo on the football, I’d guess somewhere around 1986 or 87, and someone associated with Jerry Berndt. He introduced the helmet style, so it seems logical that he’d have it on the football in his office.

  8. Tiki Owl says:

Good catch Karen. I was concentrating so much on the helmet I missed the “UPenn” R on the football.

  9. mark boone says:

That is Frankie B for certain. His brother Lukie is in the red shirt. Everyone else would, at least by default, be cousins.

See pics from Patricia Perry Berndt’s facebook timeline. Those eyes and that smile are unmistakable! Especially,
