I ran across this today and it lifted my heart. I’ve been to so many funerals here lately and it helps to remember that’s not all there is.
Bonus: I went over and had a look where they were tearing up the walk in front of Cohen House last week and discovered that a small piece had been replaced with another surface, possibly granite just from a quick inspection. Maybe some impending art?
Maybe moving the sundial back closer to the building as it once was?

I was married in Rice Chapel in May of 1982, a week after my graduation. It was remarkably affordable since I was still considered a student until the next academic year started. If I remember correctly, the chapel rent was $25 and the great hall of the RMC was $50, plus I had to use Central Kitchen as my caterer. It turned out great and we are still married after 34 years.
My late wife Karen and I were married in the chapel on June 22, 1968 and like degboo the reception was in the Grand Ballroom of the RMC. 48 years ago but it seems like yesterday. Beau Jon Sackett played the chapel organ and Rev. Leighton Younger presided.
Linda and I were married in the chapel on June 4, 1977. Our reception was not in the Grand Hall, it was at my parents’ house, but RMC & Bookstore Manager Mr. Bill Red loaned his car for Chris Reed to chauffeur us in. None of us owned a decent car back in those days as I recall.
We were married in the chapel too, but a little different from other people. We weren’t married during the summer, but during the academic year – 12/13/86 (or 12/13/-14 if you’re math geeks like we are!). Our 28th anniversary, which was the first repeat on the perpetual calendar, was on 12/13/14, with pretty close to half in each century. Another oddity was that we were married by President Rupp, which I expect didn’t happen too often.
K. Terry Koonce retired as president of ExxonMobil Production Company in Houston, Texas and vice president of ExxonMobil Corporation on June 30, 2003 after more than 41 years of service.
I know him. He’s a kind and wonderful man.
My husband (who is Rice ’72) and I were married in the chapel, too, Feb. 19, 1977. Our reception was in Cohen House; I guess I was able to get that venue because I was working as a librarian at Fondren at the time. Our rehearsal dinner was also at Cohen House. It’s a great place for parties, with lots of space and lots of class. We loved the chapel, too. Thanks for bring back some great memories!
And the bride—Beverly Montgomery—was Miss College USA—she and Terry were a year ahead of me—and two of the nicest persons you will ever meet.
Becky and I were married in the Chapel on December 17, 1988 (with flowers still in bloom in the Ray Courtyard.) We had a full orchestra, no organ. Our music was the Handel Royal Fireworks Music. And our reception was in the Grand Hall. And Professor Sandy Havens loaned his car for Robert Brazile to chauffeur us in! (1986 Toyota Camry five-speed, if I recall correctly.)
I wonder how many of us had to borrow cars from faculty and staff over the years?
