Friday Follies: Faculty Club File

This letter accompanied the donation of Faculty Club records to the Woodson in 1998. I’ve talked about the donor, Edward Hake Phillips, before, here. The second paragraph is mind boggling:

Bonus: Light up the world with kindness.

Extra Bonus: Meanwhile in the RMC, the Christmas tree is coming down.

It was quite nice in there, very cozy, students all gone and Nat King Cole singing about chestnuts and open fires.

    Did I miss Christmas again?
    🙁

    • Melissa Kean says:

      No, you’ve still got time!

      • Francis Eugene "Gene" Pratt Rice Institute 1956 says:

        Melissa,
If “I’ve got the time”, does that mean you “have the money”?

P.S., Don’t reply by e-mail, mine are being watched, by some sort of a committee.

If you’ve got the time, we’ve got the beer. Miller beer. Ta da da dum.

          Bill Peebles and Melissa,
          My reference probably preceded yours.

In the GOOD OL’ DAYS, there once was a Country Western song:
” If you’ve got the money, Honey, I’ve got the time, i-um,
          ” We’ll go honky-tonkin’ and we’ll have a time.
          “………
          “………
” If you’ve got the money, Honey, I’ve got the time.”

It must be sung in the Country Western dialect to appreciate its true classicism.

To set the record straight, I never listened, danced, or drank to this type of music. And, in fact, I am NOT nearly old enough to have done so. But I heard some of the older guys like George Randolph, Sandy Havens, John Wolda, and members of the RALLY CLUB talk about it.

I love that they used to have an annual faculty Gilbert & Sullivan production. How long did that last? The Rice Light Opera Society flourished in the 00’s, but unfortunately has also died out. Would be happy to help get a new group going!
