I immediately note two things. First, both students are so neatly dressed. And second, look how wild that asian jasmine has gotten! The picture was taken not all that long after Rayzor Hall was finished so I’m a bit curious about how fast it seems to have grown. They keep it neatly trimmed these days.
Bonus: And courtesy of Miss Alice Dean, who filed away her own copy of the calendars for several decades, we can see what events took place that first week of classes in 1962 (which was a full month later than it is this year).

Does anyone know when the brick on the edge of the walkway was re-laid? The pattern changed and the marble course is different.

Just beyond the male figure on the far right is the handrail of the staircase going down to the original Sammy’s in the basement of Fondren. The staircase was the subject of discussion a few weeks ago.
Sammy’s was still in the basement of Fondren when I was a freshman in 1956, but I wonder if it was the original Sammy’s. Surely one existed before Fondren was built. I do remember a prominent sign that said “Flunk now and avoid the rush”, a sign that took on more and more meaning as the semester progressed.
I could tell a few stories about the Fondren Library basement rooms, student lounge with TV, book store, “Thresher” office. Also the double wide “Blue Book” exam room which served as our rehearsal hall for the Senior Follies of 1956. But I fear most of that material has already been covered, and so I won’t.
BTW, hello Sandy. Remember that none of that covered walkway existed in ‘our’ day.
