Forwarding Address, 1942

Anyone who could leave Houston in the summer, did leave Houston in the summer:

I’m leaving too, for the month of July. As I have a longstanding preference for non-compliance I refuse to say where I’m headed.

I’ll likely write at least a few posts while I’m gone as the spirit moves me but for all your other history needs please see the efficient and friendly staff of the Woodson Research Center. They love to help!

Bonus: Here are the Tsanoffs, summering in Colorado sometime in the 1930s.

Wherever you are headed, I hope you have a good break!

Note that there were Academic students, and then there were Architectural and Engineering students. Looking back, I recall that we on the S-E side in the fifties would ask, “Academ, Academ, is the world really round?”, to which they would reply, “Gee, we don’t know. we haven’t gotten that far yet”.

  3. Do you think that is Katherine on the left? (I knew her as Katherine Brown, Dean of Students. I did not know her maiden name or connection to early Rice until you started your blog).

  4. William Johnson, Jr '57 says:

Could the location of the picture be Bear Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, Colorado?

    • Melissa Kean says:

It sure could. From what I’ve been able to glean so far they stayed in Arvada, possibly with relatives (I’ll eventually figure that out), and then went camping in the mountains nearby. Estes Park would have been a natural destination, especially since there were other Rice faculty staying in that general area.

    A tie?
    Summer vacation… a tie…

  6. N. Bailey says:

Reminds me of Gem Lake, also near Estes Park

  7. Dr. Tsanoff is instantly recognizable in that picture. Now that her name is mentioned, I recognize Katherine as well.
