Note that there were Academic students, and then there were Architectural and Engineering students. Looking back, I recall that we on the S-E side in the fifties would ask, “Academ, Academ, is the world really round?”, to which they would reply, “Gee, we don’t know. we haven’t gotten that far yet”.
Do you think that is Katherine on the left? (I knew her as Katherine Brown, Dean of Students. I did not know her maiden name or connection to early Rice until you started your blog).
No, Katherine is the one on the right. I don’t completely understand the haircut. Her sister Nevenna is on the left.
Could the location of the picture be Bear Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, Colorado?
It sure could. From what I’ve been able to glean so far they stayed in Arvada, possibly with relatives (I’ll eventually figure that out), and then went camping in the mountains nearby. Estes Park would have been a natural destination, especially since there were other Rice faculty staying in that general area.

That looks like Flattop Mountain in the background, which would be at Mary’s Lake in Estes Park, CO. Met my wife in Estes Park in 1966. 50th anniversary next year.
My mistake – It is Bear Lake.
