    No foolin’, 1953 was a conference co-championship year, and Rice went to the Cotton Bowl because they had defeated co-champion Texas. Those Cotton Bowl gigs used to happen every four years (1949, 1953, and 1957 teams). We saw no reason why that should not continue forever,

      Neely’s record in non-championship years was average at best. Yet Rice stuck with him in the down years and he rewarded them for their patience.

    I just had to check if the Paul Hochuli mentioned was related to recently retired NFL referee Ed Hochuli. Alas, Ed’s father is Walter and I don’t really see a Houchuli family tree, so my research will have to end there. Wouldn’t put it out of the question, however; football tends to run in the family.

    Paul Hochuli’s main claim to fame on the internet is that he while he was, as mentioned here, entertainment editor of the old Scripps-Howard Houston Press, he wrote “Houston is a whiskey and trombone town.”
