Smooth Operator

Busy, busy day today, but I did have time to look at some band stuff. It was kind of a hodge-podge folder, full of pictures that span almost the entire history of bands at Rice. There’s a lot of unusual material to share. But first, here’s something to just give you some of the flavor of my job.

As I looked through the folder, this photo caught my eye:

On the surface, it’s just a nice picture of band members at an off-campus dinner. That’s band director Bert Roth standing in the center of the room. But it was the guy with the glasses right in front of Roth who immediately attracted my attention. It didn’t take long to remember where I’d seen him before because I always admired the panache on display in this next picture, which I found at least a couple of years ago and kept just because of him:

You can’t blame him for laughing–a girl on each arm and he can still hold a drink. Neither  photo is dated but I’d say they were clearly taken in the first, more excellent half of the 1960s. I do wonder where the top picture was taken, as that is really some wild decor. Here’a one more that I believe was taken at the same event:

This is a remarkably expressive photo. Everyone is reacting as if the guy at the front right either just said something outrageous or violently broke wind.
