New Track, 1955

I found these two great photos in the HMRC in the Houston Post Collection. At first I was interested only in the wall around the track, part of the old stadium that was left standing after demolition in 1950. This wall got progressively smaller as they knocked pieces off over time. I’m not sure if any of it remains at all these days:

On second look, of course, I started to wonder about the actual track. I assume those are cinders they’re tossing out there?

And of course it reminded me of something else. We’ve got the pay sheets for the first time people threw cinders in that spot back in 1912:

In any event, the new track got off to a good start:

Bonus: Speaking of Athletics, I’m not sure who sent me this. And I’m not sure I want to know.
