Friday Afternoon Follies

Here’s a dance card from a New Year’s eve dance in 1915. I found it in an early Rice student’s scrapbook:

“Dance of the Scrags” sounds like something from the Nutcracker, but I don’t know what it means. For the Turn Verein, look here. My sense is that the Houston Turn Verein was mostly about dancing and bowling. What I got a kick out of, though, were the names of the dances on the inside of the card.

I don’t have time to hang around here this afternoon. See ya!

UPDATE: An especially alert reader sent along this postcard of the Turn Verein building where this dance was held. Thank you, Lynda!
