Is that a cigarette in her hand? (One of the photos of a woman at her desk in the dorm)

It sure is. People smoked everywhere in those days, including in the classrooms.

I matriculated at Rice in 1976, as a member of Hanszen College. At the time, the co-ed colleges were “experimental”, the experiment having been started in 1973 with Baker and Hanszen. After 5 years, the experiment was declared a success and other colleges were permitted to go co-ed.

My mother wanted to come to Rice (mid-50s), but her parents didn’t want their little girl coming to the big city and living off campus, so they bribed her: if she stayed in Beaumont and went to Lamar, they’d get her a car. She took the deal, and graduated with a degree in mathematics in three years.
