Video: Big Game in the Baker Commons

I hope you won’t be too disappointed to see Secretary James A. Baker III instead of me in this video. While I’m sure we can all agree that I’m cuter, it seems likewise clear that he has a great deal more gravitas than I do. It’s always interesting to hear what he has to say. That’s not, of course, why I’m posting this today. It’s Roy, the elk head, that seems to fit my mission.

Bonus: This was taken during the renovations last summer.

I thought it interesting that the video only alluded to his grandfather as being the one for whom Baker College is named.
In the entire meeting was anything said about Capt. Baker being the person who rescued the W.M. Rice finances and plans for Rice Institute, now University?

And what is the story behind that transom picture?
(Is that properly called a transom?)

      • Deborah Gronke Bennett says:

Yes, that’s a transom. It’s been propped open, sealed with plastic, and an air duct (presumably for exhaust) is coming out. Maybe it is for ventilation or a dust exhaust during renovation construction?

Very neat, brought back memories of when Dr. Kissinger came and lectured.

  3. Dennis C. Clark, Baker, 1976 says:

And his mother was kind enough to donate a new grand piano for the Commons, in 1973, if my memory is correct. I was asked to go choose the piano at a local dealer, and we got an excellent Kawaii. Mrs Baker came to the Christmas Party that year, and we were able to thank her for her generosity in person. I suppose that piano is long gone, but it sounded excellent in the the Commons with its big acoustics.
