Even Houston’s Political Leaders Were Young Once

Friends of Fondren 2013Last weekend the Friends of Fondren Library honored two Rice graduates, Mayor Annise Parker, ’78 and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, ’71 at their annual gala. I wasn’t there but I heard that the evening was a lot of fun and a big success.

By pure happenstance I have recently come across photos of both honorees in their bright-eyed youth. Here’s Judge Emmett in front of Lovett College, sporting a tie wide enough to land a plane on:

And here’s the Mayor, in what may well have been her high school graduation picture attached to a Jones College id card:

Bonus: Some people think that it’s all straight laced and uptight in the archives. Those people have never been here on Girl Scout cookie distribution day.

  1. I find it hard to imagine that people really think it’s all strait-laced and uptight in the archives. If so, it’s not from reading this blog! 😉

  2. Deborah Gronke Bennett (BSEE Hanszen '82) says:

I can imagine Ed and Annise groaning at those old pictures and thinking, “Oh God. I wonder what else she might find?” Rally club pictures? Club 13? The mind boggles . . .

  3. Girl Scout cookies…I can still see Bill Martin’s daughter delivering the cookies at Sid Rich. There were two tables pushed together and she was in the middle of a cookie fort, surrounded by hungry students.

  4. David M. Bynog says:

If I recall correctly, there is a really nice photo of Parker with her dog in one of the Campaniles from the 70s.
