    Tug-of-war appears to be gaining popularity with women. But, along with boaters, losing popularity with men.

      In the first photo, Will Rice’s Old Section (South Hall) is in the background, so the participants are roughly where Will Rice’s Commons is now located.

      In the second photo, the east side of Baker’s New Section is in the background, so the participants are in the field east of the New Section and south of the Baker Old Section.

    In the spring of 1966 a local radio station promoted a tug of war competition between Rice and UH, $250 to the winner and $100 to the loser. At the time Rice and UH competed in very few sports. Somehow the inquiry from the radio station went to the Student Center Board and, as the only jock on the Board, I was selected the coach and got to pick the team. We had a mix of offensive and defensive lineman, a shotputter and the reigning Houston weightlifting champion. Rice actually won and I persuaded Mr. Red to let me take the winning team to the San Jacinto Inn ( which served fried chicken and seafood, all you could eat for about $10.00 ) When I paid the check at the end of the meal, the manager said that it was the first time in years that they had lost money on the deal. I should have retired with a winning record, but no, I had to go for two in a row. In 67 UH won, and the team had hamburgers instead of seafood.
