Special Friday Baseball Edition: Win It for Haircut, Skillets and Brownie

These are very early baseball pictures. They show what I believe are members of the very first Rice team. I found them in one of Carl Knapp’s (’16) scrapbooks and have been saving them for an occasion such as this. I would really like Rice to beat NC State this weekend.

Apparently everyone got a nickname back in the day:

Knapp10

Here’s Phil Arbuckle, who coached everything:

And for good luck, my favorite guy, W.T. Betts, “Colonel,” who I’m not surprised to learn played shortstop:

Someone should talk to Coach Graham about some throw-back uniforms. At least a revival of those caps.

  2. Deborah Gronke Bennett (BSEE Hanszen '82) says:

Where were the pictures taken? Are they standing east of the dorms (eventually Baker and Will Rice colleges)? I’m guessing that because of the colonnade visible in the second photo.

    • Melissa Kean says:

I think they’re just west of the dorms, where West (Hanszen) and Wiess would later be built. In the first image you can see Gate 3 off on the right hand side and in the second you can clearly see the Administration Building to the left, with no sign yet of the Physics Building.

  3. Francis Eugene "Gene" PRATT, Institute Class of '56 says:

    Melissa,
Your water photo, along with Rice Institute, reminded me of a reprint of an American Medical Association Journal of many years ago that showed Houston. The AMA convention was going to be held there.
The photo showed Houston with mountains in the background, which is what your photo resurrected in my mind (if any).
