The Top of the RMC Bell Tower

I got a lot of emails about yesterday’s bonus picture, taken by John “Grungy” Gladu a couple of years ago from the top of the RMC bell tower:

view west, where the porch swing used to be, 5th level (roof)

In one of the mind blowing coincidences I’ve almost come to expect, attached to one of those emails was a photograph taken in the very same place in 1977.  And there’s the very same John Gladu on the right, the guy with the cap, glasses and serious fu manchu facial hair:

Top of RMC Bell Tower

I recognize a couple other rascals too and the photographer was none other than loyal reader Walter Underwood.

Look closely and you’ll see what I think is the most impressive thing in the photo–that’s a porch swing on the left.

  1. Thanks for posting this fun photo! We all look so young in it.

  2. That is a great place for a porch swing.

  3. Karen says:

Is that Wm Leler in the front left with the glasses and beard?

  4. Matt Noall says:

    I think it is Glaser…

  5. grungy1973 says:

    Front-left: Steve Glaser
He was the final obstacle in the rally – seated in the gateway between the tunnels and the basement of Baker kitchen – mute, stoic, unmoving. Had to climb over/on him to get out.

    Bill Kosar is front-center

  7. Along the back, left to right, Bob “MoMo” Moseley, Tag Borland, Steve Sullivan, Eric Sisson, Chris Reed, Catherine Harrison and Tw Cook.
In the middle, Me, and Mark Linimon
Front, Steve Glaser, Keith Robinson , Bill Kosar, John “Grungy” Gladu, and Bob Puckette

There’s a photo in the same location but about 4 years later in my Facebook photo gallery. I think it was taken the same night as the late-night golf game. It was in the Campanile that year. I would bet it was taken by Walter, TW, or Grungy.

  9. Keith Robinson says:

Wow. I’m speechless seeing this picture after all these years.
I didn’t know there were any pictures with me and the ktru/thresher/rmc people from that time.
We *are* so young – and I’m much better dressed in this photo than I ever remember being during my Rice days.

As best as I can remember, this picture would have been taken in spring or summer 1977 – very late at night.

I generally don’t comment on forums but seeing this brought me out of the woodwork.
    Thanks for sharing.
