Friday Afternoon Follies: Better Luck Next Time!

As long as we’re in 1942, let’s stay there for a minute. This is from an Owen Wister Literary Society party that year:

OWLS couple at party 1942

I have two thoughts. First, that looks like a bottle of White Horse scotch and a lot of RC Cola. I hope they weren’t mixing it. Yeech. Second, it doesn’t look like things were going quite as he had planned.

Note: The Woodson is closed all of next week. I’ll probably post every day as usual but the drivel might be sub-standard. You have been warned, so no complaints.

Thank you, Michael! Did you happen to notice that in the post about David Hellums he was wearing a watch chain? I thought of you when I found the picture.

      • mjthannisch says:

I didn’t. I will have to go back and look.

Just went back and looked. An a rather interesting watch chain at that. Did you look at it under amplfication. It even looks like it might be two chains. I need someone from the 50s to look at it.

This girl looks so familiar — fellow OWLS alums, please help identify :-

Ah, the glorious day of BYOB.
Both in Texas, as I saw it in 1952-56, and also as I had experienced it in Memphis, Tenn. (proper abbreviation for TN, in my day).
Except in Memphis, the bottle could NOT be put on the table, so all those old pictures show a circle of bottles on the floor around the tables.

Except for Gilley;s most of the establishments I went to from about 1971 to 1980 were BYOB. I still miss the Conroe Ballroom. I’d bring rum for myself and vodka for my girlfriend. Drinking age was 18 for part of that, but either the liquor store owner liked my looks or I looked older than I was, so no problem. I actually got asked my age more after they dropped the age from 21 to 18. Dance places with real dance floors seem long gone.
