Made me laugh:
It’s labeled “Shakespeare festival, ’82” and it didn’t take long to discover that our victim is Jeffrey Kurtzman, who taught in the Shepherd School before leaving for Washington University in St. Louis.
A musician–who could have seen that coming?
Bonus: He looks like a great guy, doesn’t he?
I saw that one coming! Mainly because Dr. Kurtzman was the master at Baker when I was at Rice. As I recall, he was master of Baker after Dr. Wischmeyer, who you showed recently. I still remember the rug concerts at Baker House, where I expect the bonus picture was taken. The first picture was taken during the Shakespeare fair held on the lawn between Baker and Will Rice the weekend before the Shakespeare play began. I think that might have been a new event associated with the play, starting in 1981(?). The much older tradition, was the Feast, held after the play. That was mainly for Baker and Jones seniors and their dates, and dates back to when Baker was all male. Dr. Kurtzman was a great master, although I’m sure I’m biased.
I don’t think you’re biased. In every photograph we have of him he radiates a sort of warm good humor. I wish I knew him.
I took Music 102 from Dr. Kurtzman. He was a warm and interesting teacher. He even sent me a wedding present, which I did not expect.
Indeed Jeff Kurtzman was a wonderful colleague and teacher. He and the late Susan Clark (German Dept.) shared the Director of Student Advising position and an office in the Cloisters in the 1980s right across from mine. He and his wife Kathy simply loved being Baker masters.
I roomed with his son Kenny at Hanszen during the ’84 – ’85 school year.
