The Rice Campus, January 1966

Cohen House Papers Camous Views January 1966 1 062

In Mr. Cohen’s papers I discovered this sequence of campus photos, all apparently taken on the same day in January, 1966. Some of them are exactly what you would expect but others are sort of oddball views. Many of them made me look closely; only one baffled me. Taken together they show a dramatically different place than the one I live in today.

So what do you think this is all about?

You were baffled by upright italian cypress trees with out stakes and ropes?

The last picture is looking across the road and sidewalk between the Gym/”new” field house (to the right) and Wiess / tennis courts (to the left). The slope of the strip of grass was steep and apparently prone to washing out. There were very few storm drains out in that direction resulting in flooding in significant rains. The brick and surrounding paving protected the sidewalk from washout.

Parking was allowed on the Main Street side of the road. I remember parking near here when I was O.C. in 1969-70.

I think a shadow cast by a corner of the gym is visible on the right just above the red/ car fender.

When I visit the campus now, I long for these days of less buildings and clutter. Maybe all “progress” is not for the good.

Very different for you, but this is what I remember (1967-71).

    Looks like home 1963-1967.

Looks perfect to me (Baker 68). Today’s campus gives me no feeling whatsoever of belonging to the institution, unfortunately.

  6. Looks very familiar. WRC 1975-81.

The hedges as I remember them. They mowed them down in the spring of my senior year (1982).

    Yes, what they said.
