Friday Follies: This Could Use a Banjo

What the heck is this? It’s got a date–1969–but no other identifying information. Where are they? I don’t even know where to start–what could those outfits be made of? And the mustache!

    Looks like some kind of attic space. Hanszen, maybe? Note the striped pants on the guy at far left. The women’s outfits look like Naugahyde, which was a celebrated synthetic leather at the time.

        Maybe if it’s what was called the “wienie loft” in the old section. By the time I was there the “coffeehouse” was in the basement of the new section. Although it seemed like the kind of space where something like this might happen.

          Yes, the coffehouse occupied the attic over the section two stairwell (There also was a door on the fourth floor of the old tower as well). The library was in the basement of the new section.

      Baker old wing attic has a similar structure, but I think the roof meets the wall rather lower. That area was until recently used as a weight room (and Baker Shake storage behind the wall). I understand they’ve been renovating the space.

      What I don’t understand is why anyone would be using a microphone in such a room.

    In fall 1969, it was in the attic of the old section. Because I was O.C. that year, I never made it up there. But Lynn confirmed that’s where it was. I don’t know when it moved from that location.

    My first thought was the attic space in Will Rice old dorm. I expect Hanszen looks pretty similar.

    The girl in the middle is Elise Ragland. I later sang in a madrigal group with her and some other folks; she has a lovely soprano voice. I also think it’s the Hanszen Coffeehouse, where I also sang folk songs once with Cynthia Emberson (now Irvine). Those were the days! Cynthia and I used to practice in the stairwells at Brown–great acoustics!

    Yes, Bill’s moustache was really something. The other two look familiar to me but I can’t find names to match in the old memory banks. The girl was from Jones, for some reason that comes through loud and clear, but I can’t remember her name.
