Raymond Brochstein ’55 kindly returned to the Woodson today with a couple more things to look at. The first one is a 1956 newspaper clipping that gives context to those aerial photographs from the other day. Seeing this it’s easier to understand the particular focus of those images. It’s also interesting that Central Houston was working with the Rice architecture department on redevelopment problems that early, a small link in a tradition of Rice involvement in infrastructure planning that goes back to the early days of the Institute.
He also brought in another remarkable aerial image:
This tricked me for a minute too but that’s Temple Emanu El in the foreground, with Rice directly across Sunset where it turns into Mandell. Once again, I’ve never seen a shot taken from this angle before. I, of course, immediately went to check the negatives that Raymond brought on last week and just as I expected there isn’t one for this image.
Bonus:
OK, I’m intrigued by all the Bernina sewing machines and sergers. What’s the story? These machines are not cheap.
Theater program!
Must be currently inactive. No threads or bits of patterns, no trim on the floor, etc. It is a nice costume shop. The one I work in occasionally has 3 Berninas and 1 serger.
We can only wish that that were actually the costume “shop”.
