Here’s a young lady clearly delighted to be getting her stuff ready for some intramural competition in 1960:
They were replaced a couple times over the years (we have the contracts!) but as I’m sure you did too, I assumed that they were all long gone.
They aren’t, though, although I’d guess they’re about to be. Going through the Space Science building in advance of a major renovation I found these in a basement storage room:

If I recall correctly it houses nothing but some electrical equipment. Why they did it that way I don’t know.
Might be to get equipment directly in with a crane or lift.
The baskets were pre-assigned to us in freshman gym class. Dr. Baird explained that even if the tallest members of the class were assigned a basket on the floor and the shortest members were assigned a basket above their reach, don’t ask for a reassignment. That’s exactly what happened.
