Friday Follies: I Think It’s an Ashtray?

Here’s Harold Rhodes, Director of Campus Police from 1966 to 1989, with what looks like his prized ashtray:

The shirt and tie combination is also eye-catching. Lots to look at here but no date. Any thoughts?

I’m guessing ’70s given the phone technology and the campus map. That was probably their location in Ab Lab. I didn’t realize Mr. Rhodes stayed until 1989. By then it was mostly Mary Voswinkel running things.

Based on the phone system it could be as early as the late 60’s to early 70’s.

  3. Rhonda Rhodes says:

This is my father, who went by Ike. He retired in 1989 after 23 years. When he started the department, it was campus security. Not long after, the Texas Legislature required campus security to be policemen, so Dad and his men went through Houston Police training. Dad passed away March 13, 2013. He was a kind, good-humored, peaceful person and a wonderful father. We miss him. I’m not sure what year this photo was taken but know that ashtray! This was in the new building that was built I believe in the late 70s while I was a student there. So, it was at least the late 70s, if not later.

  4. On the far left, that looks like a microfiche reader under the dust cover. And next to it, a vertically-mounted flip book full of microfiches.

Also, the ashtray looks like it is sized for cigars.

He interviewed me in early 1973 about the theft of my stereo on New Year’s Eve. He worked on 3 different cigarettes during our 20-minute chat. That ashtray would have needed to be dumped more than once a day to keep up with him.

  5. Steve Lukingbeal, Hanszen 1976 says:

Based on the style of eyeglasses of both men and the office technology, I would venture a guess of 1975 or 1976.

  6. Texas SPQ says:

I’m fairly sure that in the late 60s-early 70s, the office was off the outer walkway of the RMC, right next to the Dean of Students office.
