“What we wear where,” 1964

We have pathetically little from Jones College in the Woodson, especially from the earlier days. (If you have stuff, let me know.) This afternoon, though, I ran across a newsletter, The Jones Jabberwocky, that came out in the summer of 1964. I couldn’t decide on an appropriate excerpt (Dr. Class is growing a mustache! Be sure to budget for hairspray!) so I’ll reproduce the entire thing here. There’s lots to chew on but my favorite is the lowdown on dress code for the incoming freshmen. It would be inconceivable only a few years later.

This was a fun article from Jones!! 🙂 Dariel Davis and Sandy Duncan came to Rice the same year I did from Edison High School, Tulsa. I think there were 8 of us in total. Lost track of them both, and I don’t think they weren’t at the 50 year reunion (?) last year, but it would be interesting to know where they ended up. Barbara Manroe was someone I knew in middle school in Houston (Meyerland — Sharpstown Middle School?)). Never really reconnected after getting to Rice. Life is too short 🙂

      Auto correct 🙁 “I don’t think they weren’t” should be “I don’t think they WERE”.. Sigh …

Grant, you can look up any alum in the online Rice alumni directory, unless they specifically opt out of being included. Many are there who did not graduate (plus many who did).

Yes, I know. Didn’t have time. Just thought it was interesting that some High School classmates showed up int he newsletter 🙂

Under Security note the reference to “Pinkies”, which were discussed in earlier post about small cars that were placed in interesting places on campus. Also, Karen Nelson is still only dating Barney Geisen as they have been married 50 years, give or take a year or two.

This was written back in the old days when almost every student held a job during the summer. That’s very unusual these days.

“Rally Clubbers make neat dates.” Indeed!

Memories, memories! Thanks for sharing. Sorry I can’t offer any mementos from Jones College, but I only slept on a mattress on the floor there. However, I must always compliment Jones College for making space available for us townies when we wanted to stay on campus, which was pretty often.
