Y’all, I’m having a wild day and it isn’t over yet so those tables in the library will have to wait. In the meantime, this: Someone was using a box of H.A. Wilson‘s papers the other day and when I saw it sitting on a cart in the back I headed right for it. Wilson, of course, was one of Rice’s original faculty members, our first professor of physics. Here he is, a serious and scholarly gentleman:
It’s fair, I think, to say that this was about the last thing I expected to see when I opened his box:
It turned out to be his daughter Joan’s high school scrapbook.
Bonus: The most interesting thing in the scrapbook was this photograph, which I believe is the sunken garden where Mecom Fountain is today.
They look like they are owl bowing to a tiny sapling?
Yeah, I’m OK with that being early ’30s instead of the ’40s. You can see from the location of the taxicab and the steps why the sunken garden went away. It was the site of numerous spectacular auto accidents.
