Friday Follies: Bonkers

I have no data about this picture, which I found in a small box labeled “Unsorted Slides” but it made me smile. My first wild guess is late ’70s:

Bonus: I thought about touching it anyway. I didn’t but I might when I go back to the parking lot.

Why does the name of the picture say basketball when they’re holding volleyballs with a volleyball net on the court behind the blue curtain?

    • Melissa Kean says:

That’s an easy one! It says “basketball” because I was in a hurry when I labeled it and didn’t look closely. It *still* says “basketball” because I was in a hurry to go home and didn’t notice.

The woman in the Bonkers(?) shirt looks to be Debbie Turner Kochevar Baker 1978.

In 1979, the Oct. 11 (https://scholarship.rice.edu/bitstream/handle/1911/67318/thr19791011.pdf) and November 8 (https://scholarship.rice.edu/bitstream/handle/1911/67326/thr19791108.pdf) Threshers mention the Baker Bonkers as being a team competing in Women’s Intramural Volleyball. (The October article has them in the Wednesday league … and the November one in the Thursday league.)

Some of the people in this picture are class of 1978 if that helps.

    Lynn Laverty Elsenhans ‘78

  5. Lou Ann Montana says:

Several of these young women were on the Rice Women’s Volleyball team as well, among them Debbie Turner (as Clark identified), Bonnie Huval (second from right) and Teresa Escobar (first on the right – and please don’t hold me to this id – so many years have passed!).

Also, they’re not all from Baker. Patti Sharp (third from the left) was in Jones College (and also on the university team).

I would guess 1978. Thanks Melissa – I enjoyed pulling out a couple of my Campaniles!!

Oh, and about the lath – that’s lovely writing for a surveyor! If you go back to touch it, I’d be very curious to know if there’s something in the ground next to it…

My first response upon seeing this shot was “Who says the TRG is unattractive?” This is a bevy of beautiful women!

  7. Bill Peebles, Hanszen '70 says:

Then, as now, women volley ball players wear short shorts. I wonder how that got started.

  8. Caroline Hassell says:

On the far left on the back row is Lisa Strawn Foley, Class of 1980. Pretty sure.
