New Track, 1955

I found these two great photos in the HMRC in the Houston Post Collection. At first I was interested only in the wall around the track, part of the old stadium that was left standing after demolition in 1950. This wall got progressively smaller as they knocked pieces off over time. I’m not sure if any of it remains at all these days:

On second look, of course, I started to wonder about the actual track. I assume those are cinders they’re tossing out there?

And of course it reminded me of something else. We’ve got the pay sheets for the first time people threw cinders in that spot back in 1912:

In any event, the new track got off to a good start:

Bonus: Speaking of Athletics, I’m not sure who sent me this. And I’m not sure I want to know.

OK, someone has to say it. Who sent you an athletic supporter? A supporter, of course! (Ba dum dum).

I’m intrigued by the varying hourly rates…

    Melissa,
You can tell us who it was. We’re all old friends.
And nobody, but nobody, would breathe a word of it.

Regarding the brick wall around the old football field, the last remaining section was torn down at least ten years ago. It was the curved section at the northwestern end of the field. I seem to remember that the wall was damaged during a storm with strong wind gusts, and the athletic department decided to tear it down rather than repairing it.
