From the October 5, 1978 Thresher, a temporary job offer that includes a free po’ boy as inducement:
I’m sure you all remember this six-year-old post about a set of images that I had trouble deciphering, including this beauty:
They turned out, of course, to be the only pictures I’ve seen of Election Central, the project which is succinctly described in the want ad above. We’re now working on a short film about it and if you participated in it in any way I’d love to talk with you. Think of it as one more chance to be part of the behind the scenes action! If you’re willing either leave a comment here or email me at email@example.com. It will be fun, I promise.
Bonus: Ten extra credit points to the first Election Central veteran who can identify what this was used for. Hint: that’s not a date on there.
The 2013 post included this: “… we had these huge racks with coat hangers and clips for holding the unprocessed (or processed) tally sheets.”
So here’s a map showing Harris County’s Precinct 2012, which includes much of Aldine: https://aldinedistrict.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/D_EA_DistrictWithPrecinctBoundaries30x40_WithSubdivisions_Apr2012.pdf
Ten points for Mike! First rate reading skills.
If I recall correctly, wasn’t Grungy’s brother Mike a motorcycle courier for this project?
Yes, you’re right. We’re trying to track him down.
He is aware of the request for information.
Mike is on FB. Easy to find.
I’ve cc’ed him in email the lead on the project.
It would be odd if he didn’t reply, as he really likes that story.
I wasn’t at Election Central, but I was on the KTRU board the evening that Reagan was elected (November 4, 1980). We usually had several people in the newsroom organizing the reporting.
Neat, just found that evening in the KTRU archives: https://scholarship.rice.edu/handle/1911/96953
