Friday Follies: Quarantine Tennis, no date

Sad!

Not only do I have no date for this (maybe ’70s?), I’m also not quite certain where the room was. I spent a lot of time in the gym before the big renovation but I can’t get a handle on this.

Bonus: At least the flowers are pretty.

The hair looks like Harold Solomon’s … but he used a two-handed backhand. So maybe it’s Mike Estep?

Both are among Rice’s all-time tennis greats.

Solomon only competed for Rice for two years (1971-2) before going pro. (I enjoyed holding my own with him in ping-pong in the RMC.)

Estep was a three-time ITA All-American (1969-71) who reached the NCAA singles final in 1969 and the semifinals in 1970.

Both won SWC singles titles (Estep in 1970, Solomon in 1971).

That looks a lot like a room where we had “Dance” for HYPR credit, around 1993.

  3. Looks like the room where we had the fencing unit in phys. ed. As I remember, it was on the colleges side of the Autry Court building. Enter, the baskets for checking out gym uniforms are on your left, keep going, then turn right. Not sure if there was a hall, but then turn right again to get to that room. The windows in the photo would have looked out towards (old) Wiess.

Ah! I see the fencing pistes on the floor. Mr. Tennis Player is standing on the nearest one.

Pretty sure that the door was behind us to the left. Yep. You can see the door in the far mirror.

The entrance through the new wing of Baker, with the nice flahrs, and a wall light that doesn’t match the ornate black ones that I recently discovered.
