Wintry Mix

Sorry to have been absent recently–I was trying hard to finish a project which is just . . . about . . . done. (I hope.)

I drove through a lot of stuff coming from northwest on Monday–we saw rain, freezing rain, sleet, and even some snow–but this looks like a legitimate snow storm. I think it was January, 1918 and I love that someone got up and took a picture from the Administration Building

Bonus:  The other day I was walking along the O’Connor building, thinking as usual about something else, and for some reason at that moment something seemed odd. I stopped for a minute to pay attention and finally saw it.

The new sidewalks don’t have pea gravel!

Never in 55 years did it occur to me to question or even actively notice the sidewalks. But… the bare concrete feels… well… just wrong 🙁 Intentional? Oversight? Whyyyy?

Granted, and uncomfortable to bare feet. My roommate hit the pavement on his bicycle for just that reason. But simple gray concrete??!!! Couldn’t there have been something done that was more attractive and harmonious?

That’s good. They won’t be near as slippery when wet.

ADA requirement? Granted, they could have used colored concrete.
    Slip Resistance
Accessible surfaces must be slip resistant to minimize hazards to people with disabilities, especially those who are ambulatory or semi-ambulatory or who use canes, crutches, and other walking aids. However, the standards do not specify a minimum level of slip resistance (coefficient of friction) because a consensus method for rating slip resistance remains elusive. While different measurement devices and protocols have been developed over the years for use in the laboratory or the field, a widely accepted method has not emerged.

The plain concrete looks a bit out of place.

There is nothing good about the pea gravel. Slippery, uncomfortable, and bad for moving equipment. In addition to the ADA concerns mentioned in the other thread, I wonder if there is a permeability requirement. Of course, they could also just be doing it on the cheap.
