It’s been one of those rains that just won’t stop. Hard, soft, drizzle, drips, but always something. Three days so far. After a hundred and twenty years of working on campus drainage we don’t get the kind of epic floods we used to, but this is still a lot. I won’t even show you what the quad looks like.
Just today I came across a bunch of images of a football game played in the rain sometime in the early 1970s. They were in one of the binders full of contact sheets that came in this collection. We have the negatives that go with them but not the time to scan them today, so bear with me here.
It’s interesting that although it was raining pretty hard the student section was fairly full. Enjoyment levels seemed to depend on whether you had possession of an umbrella or not:

Bonus: 
When I was in the MOB in the early 80’s, it happened about once or twice a year that we would get rained on at a football game. Woodwinds and electric bass went back in the case, brass just toughed it out. It was reasonably miserable. It seemed to have little effect on the number of fans, though. After a certain point you just can’t get any more wet.

While the person sitting in the stands looks like they’re wearing a denim MOB uniform, that doesn’t map to the years otherwise suggested.
My guess is the USC game in 1971, for the appearance of the opponents’ uniforms, and the use of the term “waterlogged” in this Thresher tale of the game.

Mark Williams, who lettered in football in ’70, ’71, ’72 says
“USC ‘71. Poured the entire game. Only home game I remember playing in where it rained.”
