The Back of the Shepherd School

Well, I’m in New York for a few days so we’re going to have to rely on whatever I can find on this flash drive. Luckily, I’ve managed to collect a lot of random Rice historical miscellany over the last couple of years so there should be no problem as long as you don’t expect War and Peace.

Ever since I came to Rice lo these many years ago, I’ve parked my car out in the stadium lot. Hence, I see the back of the Shepherd School every day when I’m walking back to my car from the library. I have a pretty good idea what it looks like, but not long ago I came across this picture that was interesting to me because I can’t recall it looking like this and I can’t figure out how to date it. The thing that jumps out at me is that there aren’t any sidewalks yet.

Just for reference, here’s roughly the same view taken last week. There’s been quite a bit of change.

Finally, here’s an aerial of construction from ten years ago. I think we can safely conclude that the first picture is older than this, but how much I don’t know. Anyone?

Bonus: The moon on Tuesday morning.

Extra Bonus: Lots of tall buildings here.

That’s pretty much the view we had from The MOB practice field (where the Baker Institute is now).

  2. Alice Pratt Brown Hall was substantially complete, at least on the outside, by the fall of 1990. We spent the 1990-91 school year in the practice rooms, studios, and offices at Alice Pratt Brown and used Hamman Hall and the now demolished Shepherd School Recital Hall at Bonner Lab for performances. The first year we had everything under one roof including the performance halls was the 1991-92 school year. I believe that’s a Paul Hester photo and the first place I’ve ever seen it published was our January 1992 calendar, which makes it likely the picture was taken in 1991.

  3. To corroborate Marty, this is how I remember APB looking in the fall of ’91

The construction photo is how things were in 2002 when I started. The Jones School construction crew would leave the gates unlocked every night and we would have to check the area and secure the gates.
