Sorry, I seem to have lost my train of thought.
Bonus: Given my well known appreciation of aerial shots of campus, I’m dumbfounded that nobody told me about this. (Yes, Brandon Martin, I’m looking at you.) I need to talk to this guy–I have several scathingly brilliant ideas.
Extra Bonus: Another gorgeous shot from Tommy Lavergne. Thanks, Tommy!
Another Extra Bonus: I took this when we were in the throes of centennial prep. The guys working on it could not have been any nicer–I could tell you quite a bit about how fountains work.
And Finally: Next week is spring break and I’m going on a real vacation. I’m planning on posting as usual but who knows if I’ll have an internet connection. So what I’m trying to say is don’t panic if I disappear for a week. If I disappear for two weeks, though, please send someone to look.
If I recall correctly, there’s an actual pump room under that fountain.
Isn’t the Cohen House fountain Lalique crystal?
Can we ask for more aerial videos? I would love to see modern shots which match some of our favorite vintage aerial shots of Rice which you have shown here on your blog. I want to see the colleges from above. I want to see a survey of the Harris Bayou area. More, more!
Third place at what sport? What year? Inquiring minds remain unfulfilled.
Given the glove held by a fellow on the front row and the info on the picture that it is 1960, I would guess Baker came in third in the spring intramural competition in 1960. Since there were only four men’s colleges, the Baker Men did not have an outstanding spring that year.
I see the glove after blowing up the picture, but where does it say 1960? Did we get different editions?
The title of the pic, when you click on it, is “1960-intramurals-side-view-of-dorms.jpg” That, I believe, is where the 1960 ID came from.
From the RUBPA E-mail of March 1, 2013:
TRIVIA ANSWER:
“Carl Isgren is the shirtless Rice student in Melissa Kean’s beefcake picture here. He graduated magna cum laude in 1961, majoring in accounting and economics. In 2001, he received the Honorary “R” Award and from 2004 to 2008 he served on the Board of Trustees.”
“Also, thanks to his generosity, Rice athletes enjoy the use of the Isgren Sports Performance Center and the Gibbs Rec Center includes the Carl and Katherine Isgren Weights and Cardio Room. And, the Rice strength and conditioning staff annually presents the Carl Isgren Iron Owl Award at the Night of the Owl.”
“Way to go, Kirwin Drouet, Bryant Wilkinson, ANN BIXBY, BETTY BIXBY, NANCY BURCH and ANN PETERSON.” [Emphasis mine.]
My Question: Why do so many ladies recognize and/or remember the shirtless CARL ISGREN?
