Greenhouses?

I was recently looking through an envelope of photos that came from the biology building and I noticed these two undated images because I had just been poking around over where I think they were taken.

And a close-up, just for fun:

And here are the current facilities, which must have replaced this little building:

P1090405

So here are the questions, aside from the lack of any date: Are these in fact meant for the same purposes as the earlier building? Are they in fact in the same place? What’s troubling me is that in the first photo I can’t account for the light colored structure that you can see peeking out from behind the tree just above the parked car. What could that be?

Late ’70s Chevy. Those new greenhouses show up on Google Earth in 2008. I thought I knew where this was over by Bio but I can’t find it on GE. If that’s looking back across Alumni Drive there shouldn’t be anything there yet, but maybe it’s a Baker Institute tent or something and the car is a twenty-year-old survivor.

Check the 1989 Google Earth view. There’s a white square building (or something) that appears in the southwest corner of the intersection of Alumni Dr. and Rice Blvd., only in that year’s shot, that might be it. Also, in that view (and even better in the 1995 view), you can just make out what could be the old greenhouse at the top end of the parking lot just to the north of where the current ones are built.

Yes, I agree that the little rectangle at the top of the parking lot in the ’95 view is probably the greenhouse. That would explain why it had to move because it looks like the new building was there by 2002.

Yes. I looked at a lot of aerials last night and I think that’s it. I don’t know what you can see on Google Earth but in some of the photos I have you can clearly see that the parking spaces there are at the right angle–the only place I’ve so far found where that’s true.

You mean the “correct” angle, right? Because it’s not a right angle. 😉

Melissa….. About 7-8 years ago we had to make some decisions in B&G about the greenhouses……think David Rodd can give you a ‘history’ of them…… Susie

When is a right angle not a right angle? When it’s a cute little angle. Sorry to be obtuse.

  7. marmer01 says:

But, yes, what is that white square? That must be whatever the building is. Something to do with the observatory or the prairie? Or a tent of some kind?

  8. Melissa,
The old greenhouse in the photo may be the one that was located near the southeast corner of the OEDK (formerly Hicks Kitchen) just across Campanile Road from Ryon Lab – the site of our current recycling yard.

Hi Pat! thought about that but I don’t recall there being a hedge in that vicinity. I’m not working on campus today so I don’t have access to all the aerial photos in the archives. I plan on looking at them as soon as I can!

So now for something completely different.
What were and are the greenhouses used for?
