West Campus Transformed, 1950

It happened in the blink of an eye. This first image is from the 1950 Campanile:

And I found this next one among Bud Morehead’s slides. It’s also dated 1950:

I guess it was progress but it makes my heart sink a bit.

    Wow! Look how many cars there are in that first picture. Double and triple-parked everywhere, including the neighborhood businesses. Of course, in 1949/1950 this would have been the zenith of Rice football and the direct reason of the stadium construction. And probably the reason for the big parking lot.

    The zenith of Houston football in general, too, as pro ball was a decade or more away and UH was still pretty small.

    It appears that burial of Harris Gully is progressing in the first picture to the north of the old stadium.
