Wow! Look how many cars there are in that first picture. Double and triple-parked everywhere, including the neighborhood businesses. Of course, in 1949/1950 this would have been the zenith of Rice football and the direct reason of the stadium construction. And probably the reason for the big parking lot.
The zenith of Houston football in general, too, as pro ball was a decade or more away and UH was still pretty small.
It appears that burial of Harris Gully is progressing in the first picture to the north of the old stadium.
