That’s Red Bale ’36, beloved student athlete, coach, and Athletic Director. Heaven only knows what mischief he’s gotten into here. He doesn’t look to worried, though.

    I did a Google search and found this reference in a 1975 Rice Thresher: https://scholarship.rice.edu/bitstream/handle/1911/66970/thr19750109.pdf?sequence=1. See page 10. The article “Bale pleased with conference lie detector rule” discusses using polygraph tests in investigations of football rules violations in the SWC.
    The quote: “Bale laughed when he revealed that he had taken a “practice” lie detector test about three weeks ago. Jack Agnes of the Houston Post convinced Bale to go to the police station and see exactly how the test is administered.”

    In 1975, Red Bale required all of us on athletic scholarship to sit down and answer an extensive questionnaire under oath about possible NCAA violations. He served as proctor but no lie detector test was administered. I fessed up that in 1972 a prominent alum had taken me to The House of Pies on Kirby and allowed me to carry out three pies for my Hanszen suite mates. Obviously, no one else in the Southwest Conference administered lie detector tests because rule violations were rampant at all colleges, especially UT and SMU which ultimately received the death penalty.

        They were probably NOT mince meat or French lemon pies — 2 of my favorites — which nobody appears to make anymore.
        Doesn’t surprise me though: my sweet bride and I were involved in 2 Nealson Rating surveys in our early years. [Did we really have early years?] All of the TV programs we enjoyed were removed from TV and NEVER mentioned again!
        {sigh}
