    I remember a lonely 1953 Chevrolet with Minnesota license plates being abandoned in the middle of the parking lot for over two months after the Super Bowl before Rice staff removed it. It was progressively vandalized and torched by the students until it turned up missing one day.

    I remember it well. Our daughters were teenagers and they sold programs on Main Street in front of our church, St. Paul’s Methodist, as folks headed to the game.

        I might have.
        However, I did NOT have so many that I have forgotten that Miami was unbeatable.
        That was during their 17 (I think) straight win days.
        In later years I remember the Miami coach’s being quoted as saying something to the effect that NO NFL team beat them, only the “new” AFL — which had led to the breakup of that team.

    Surely they had more than one gnome cleaning up. The old grey owl, Coach Jess Neely, used to actually call them nomes!

    We were attending church services that morning at Rice Temple Baptist Church, 6409 Greenbrier. A good friend had tickets, but we did not. I recall people using the church parking lot for the game that day. The church is a couple of blocks further from the stadium than is Roberts Elementary. Hello to Jim Walzel, a former colleague at Shell Oil Company.

    I got the job (with others) to prevent the Hanszen parking lot from being overrun with attendees. Several were less than gracious when being informed that the lot was not available for game parking. (Also could have made a ton of money by not noticing people parking)
