A Periodic Reminder

I’m getting ready to take a couple of weeks off in July and it got me thinking about last summer’s ill fated vacation. As I’m sure you all remember before I got sick I made it as far as the archives at the University of Wyoming where I checked out the papers of Jack Glenn ’26.

Looking though the things I found there I came across an image I’d forgotten about, a big football pep rally downtown. I attach it here to remind everyone that there’s a “s” on the end:

I don’t know when this was taken but we lost to A&M three out of the four years Glenn was at Rice. We did take one from them in 1923, winning 7-6.

Bonus: Camp time!

Well, 1923 was a bit before my time, but I vividly remember Rice beating TAMU 7-6 in 1957. The Aggies were were No. 1 in the country before that day, and the win helped give the Owls their last SWC championship in football.

Owl wins before Glenn’s time came in 1915 and 1916. So “Before” could refer to these years or to 1923. My guess is it refers to the 1923 win, as the previous wins were probably long forgotten by then. So this rally must be in 1924 or 1925. The 1924 game was in College Station (a 13-6 loss) and probably would not have inspired such a pep rally. Also, if this was 1924, the sign probably would have read “Do It Again” or some such. So I’m thinking this was taken in 1925, probably on Friday, November 13, as the game was on the 14th (alas, a 17-10 loss.) The Owls would not win again until a 7-0 victory at College Station in 1930.
