This is picture is unidentified except for this bit on the back: “track sprint relay team.” So not only do we not know the date, we’re also in the dark about who they managed to get to wear those goofy uniform shirts:
I’ve never seen them before and frankly I’m not surprised.
Bonus: Mech Lab again.
Two notes: First, someone on Facebook (I think) asked for more posts about the 1980s-2000s era. I accept this challenge.
Second, I will be out of town the rest of this week for a family funeral in Iowa. See you Monday.
Bonus points for the 1980s if you find a picture of me.
If that’s Scurlock Tower in the background, then this would be late-70s to 1981.
This link (https://scholarship.rice.edu/handle/1911/68411) says this photo was taken “ca 1980” and shows “Rice University men’s track relay competitors, Ellison Stinson, Carlton Benett, Steve Martin, Bruce Gingrich.” (Photo by Lou Witt).
Here’s a link to another photo of Gingrich in the same track uniform: https://scholarship.rice.edu/bitstream/handle/1911/68376/wrc02761.jpg?sequence=1&isAllowed=y
An old track “Champions” booklet said Gingrich matriculated in 1976 and “was a five-time Southwest Conference champion. … (H)e broke the Rice and SWC record in the 800meters (and) in 1979, Gingrich anchored the sprint medley relay to a new world record with an 800-meter split of 1:44.8, which at that time was the No. 1 time in the world for ages 21 and younger.”
That 1979 record (3:14.5) was made by Darrell Mouton, Carton Derret, Steve Baldwin and Bruce Gengrich.
Steve Straub was track team coach during this time. Perhaps he can relate some of the history of these distinctive uniforms.
Hmmm. The very tight shorts, longish haircuts, and lengthy socks are clearly indicative of the 70s. So are the Med Center buildings in the background. My guess is that the picture was taken in the late 70s when neither you or I kept track of the individual athletes on the track team.

Darrell Mouton, Carlton Derrett, Steve Martin, Brucw Gingrich. Probably 1979. Mouton held the Rice 100m record for many years.

That is a Nike “pinwheel” logo. I searched and searched, then zoomed in and noticed it was a wheel made of Nike shwooshes. Crazy, man.
Well done, Walter!!
Mouton and Derrett were football teammates of mine – Derrett actually finished 6th in the NCAA 100 meters one year.
