I was looking through some of the Baker College scrapbooks that I found in their library recently and much to my surprise I turned a page and discovered this picture of the distinguished Rice history professor Albert Van Helden, relaxing of an afternoon:
I particularly like the can of Schlitz, which reminds me of my happy youth.
In the interest of fairness, here’s a photo of a somewhat more scholarly-looking Professor Van Helden (in the Woodson, I believe) preparing for the 1987 symposium on Julian Huxley:

Perhaps you photographic evidence of a subspecies of Ents that have invaded Rice? Here we have one sunning itself while another stands guard.
To be clear, I meant the bushy things, not Van Helden.
That appears to be an aluminum Schlitz can.
The pre-Aluminum Schlitz can was one of the hardest cans to bend manually, to prove one’s machismo.
Drinking the beer also fostered thoracic hirsutism.
There was a Chinese proverb that stated that if one wished to have a Large tree, one should plant a Small tree.
Someone should set up an Academic Quad Webcam, with a time-lapse feature.
This way the migratory paths of the various flora and fauna could be documented.
Something I’ve been wondering about…
In Houston, nearly all trees are planted with a variety of guy-wires for support (some support more successful than we’re seeing here).
While we lived in Hawaii, I noticed that even really large transplanted palm trees – over 30′ tall – had no external support, and they never had the kind of problems that we’ve seen Dr. Kean document here. Hawaii is not without wind, so I have to wonder what both the people here are doing wrong and the people there are doing right.
