Well, they’re all back now and the 2013-14 school year started today. A lot of the beginning-of-the-year rituals are kind of the same as they’ve always been, but also kind of not the same. Registration, for example, is mostly an on-line thing these days. If you click on that link, you’ll note that it’s rather confusing. Confusion, however, may simply be inherent in registration–here’s a set of instruction from the late ’40s that is no less dizzying:

I looked at the on-line registration. Wow, much more complicated. In the mid-70’s, I would look at the course catalog the night before, and choose which courses I wanted to attend. I’d make my preliminary schedule on some plain paper. I would start attending those sections, perhaps choosing among one or two electives, or changing a section of a required course to a better time or instructor (but often there was no choice). 2 weeks later, I would turn in my registration (on a paper form) to the registrar’s office, pay my tuition and fees, and get a computer printed version back. And that was it. I never had to do anything in April of the semester before!
