Matriculation, 1970

I love this picture. Look at their faces! They were listening to Norman Hackerman–it was his first Rice matriculation–tell them what was going to be expected of them. You can almost feel the trepidation.

    I spy in the audience the incomparable history prof Charles Garside and Loralei Philpott, wife of Baker College Master Charles Philpott. (Garside was a faculty associate at Baker.)

    They are located in the right side of the photo, four rows behind the coed in the third row whose white-trimmed dress has three large white buttons.
