Bonus: In a related development, we got a big box of stuff from Sid Rich today. I can’t wait to have a closer look at it on Monday.

    What kind of ball are they dropping through all of those encircling arms?
    One of the t-shirts say 1987, if that’s any clue.

      A ball is visible near the fingertips of the fellow on the lowest balcony. It looks like it might be a tennis ball (or a baseball or orange).

      Sid Rich students use tennis balls for Balcony Ball. Today, the game is typically played on each College Night and (usually) once during O-Week to teach it to the new students. We play out of tradition, but it is a very frustrating/difficult game to win (or perhaps my class is just terrible at it). It looks as though the students in the photo are about to successfully complete the game.

    A fellow undergraduate during my time (1976-1982) told me a story about someone dropping a watermelon from up there. Imagine the flies, roaches and smell on a hot summer Houston day! Maybe you should do a post on all the Sid Rich dropping-off-the-balcony stories. I’m sure there are more.

      An empty keg shell and folding chair have been dropped in the last two years, each of which led to temporary locking of the balconies. Though they were only closed for a month or so, it seemed like eternity to us. Of course neither was dropped by a Sidizen.
